The “Operate Boom Lift“ Course is aimed at providing individuals with the knowledge and skills to operate boom lifts safely. At the end of the course, participants will be proficient in selection of appropriate boom lifts, conducting risk assessment and route checks, identification of hazards for boom lift operations, basic boom lift operations and reinstating boom lifts in a safe manner.

Course Objective

At the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • select an appropriate Boom Lift, including risk assessment for the task to be carried out
  • state the safety requirements under the Workplace Safety and Health Act and the Code of Practice for Working Safely At Height related to Boom Lift
  • carry out pre-start inspection
  • state factors affecting stability
  • identify common hazards during traveling, setup, operation and parking of Boom Lift and their control measures
  • conduct workplace inspection
  • state function of Boom Lift controls, including emergency controls and emergency procedures
  • use personal protective equipment appropriate to the task, worksite and environment as a result of the risk assessment conducted and according to the manufacturer’s guidelines
  • operate Boom Lift safely
Assumed Skills & Knowledge / Pre-requisites

 Learners must be above 18 years of age and are assumed to:

  • have a basic knowledge of the relevant sector of work
  • be able to listen and speak English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills (ES) level 3 (Applies to English Courses ONLY)
  • be able to read and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to ES level 3 (Applies to English Courses ONLY)
  • be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ES level 3; and
  • be medically fit to work at height
